My Self Reflection about LSC-2103 course

Self Reflection

            In order to improve my skills in English reading, writing, listening and grammar, I must take some courses in the College. One of those courses is “Academic Reading and writing”.  In this course the most thing I like is everything; both reading article and learning how to summarize it in best format. To be honest there is no part in the course which I did not like it. In this course my reading and summarizing skill improved both. It is really important to have best skill in reading any books, articles…etc and know how to use outlines in order to write your summary. Improving my skills in reading and summarizing will help me in the future once I will do my master or even nowadays. Therefore, I have the skill to write a report for any subject during my bachelor courses. The biggest challenges in written communication are how to get main points from it and how to reorganize them if I have more than one. In order to improve my weaknesses in this course, I need to practice more and more and also I must always refer to use outlines because it help me a lot in organizing and understand the sequences of the paragraphs. The LSC2103 course is really fine from my point of view which covers everything related to it. So, I learned how to read articles starting from small one and ending with two or more articles combine together. Not only this, but the progress of summarizing move in a very fantastic way which makes the student improving his skills. Finally, the improvement of my skills in reading, summarizing and writing is really related to the teacher who taught us the course.

Fossil Fuel (France)

          Fuels were formed from ancient animals and plants so that why they are called Fossil.  Under the term fossil fuels it falls three basic types which are oil, coal and natural gas (The Energy Story – Chapter 8, 2012). All those three types of fossil fuels are providing most of the energy which we are using today. Fossil fuels are considered to be so important for most countries in the world because they are the main source of energy for most of their usage. They are being used for many purposes such as electricity, fuel for cars and many others.

 The three types of fossil fuel can be mined in different ways such as coal can be found either at the surface or deep underground, but oil is being pumped from wells drilled deep in the ground. Also, natural gas is mined in the same way as oil through wells. Out of those three types the best clean-burning fossil fuel is natural gas and it is being used widely. The rest of fossil fuel types which are oil and coal are the most risky fuels and they caused lots of air pollution (Fossil fuel, Wikipedia, 2013). There are many problems associated with fossil fuels such as the main problem is that they are limited and can run out quickly. Also, the increasing demand for fossil fuels forms another problem, i.e. more pollution.

 There are environmental problems associated with fossil fuel: one is from getting fossil fuels from the ground and the other one during burning those fossil fuels. Also, the increase of global warming is related to the problems associated with fossil fuels. We must not rely on the fossil fuels because they are limited and must start using other sources of energy provided from nature. There are many sources of energy which are considerable to be friendly to the environment. Those natural energies provide a clean source of energy and negate forms of pollution such as: wind power, solar power, nuclear power and such many others.

Energy alternatives:

            Prior to the development of fossil fuels such as: natural gas, oil and coal; people used all types of energies, which were renewable. Many types of alternative energy are considered to be natural for example: solar power, wind power, water power and such many others. Wind power is a process of changing the energy from the wind into a useful energy. Therefore, it can be used to run wind turbines in order to generate energy such as: electrical power, so as wind speed increases the energy which is produced will increase and vise versa. “Globally, the potential of wind energy is five times total current global energy production, or 40 time’s current electricity demand” (Wind power, Wikipedia, 2013). Other type of renewable energy which is solar energy is an energy which is comes from sun in a form of solar radiation. Solar radiation is used to produce heat or to generate electricity (Solar power, Wikipedia, 2013). The other type of renewable energy which is water power is a power which is come from the energy of water running in a river or waterfalls which have sufficient energy to provide lots of useful energies. So, the force of the water provides the energy in order to use it to produce other energies such as: electrical power and can provide mechanical power (Hydropower, Wikipedia, 2013). All of those previous sources of energy are considered to be renewable energy which don’t produce any pollution and are not limited.

            France is a European country that followed other countries habits especially in using types of fossil fuels. Therefore, they were using coal, oil, natural gas and petroleum to the maximum without any thinking that they will run out quickly. Since a few years France started to think clearly about alternative energies which have the ability to sustain for a long time and not providing any pollution. One of renewable energy which France is using it nowadays is the solar energy. They started to make lots of solar panels that have the ability to produce electricity for the country. Also they are looking forward to increase their solar panels in order to increase production of electricity which can cover the job of fossil fuels in producing electricity. The other renewable energy which France tried to use it is the wind energy. Therefore, they started to build a wind farm that is sited off the Atlantic coast. This energy have the ability to provide high amount of electricity (“Energy in France”, Wikipedia, 2013). However, the most important energy source in France and it being a primary source of electric power is the nuclear power. This renewable energy is a useful energy which is being a free of CO₂ production. With the nuclear power France is being the lowest country in producing pollution in Europe and the cheapest energy production except in a long term. (“Nuclear power in France”, Wikipedia, 2013).

Conclusion:

            In conclusion, energy is an important feature for our daily life. It helps us to make our life much easier and interesting. Unfortunately, the energy which we get it from fossil fuels are going to run out one day, that is why most of countries started to think positively about renewable energies that are going to be an alternative energy instead of fossil fuels. Also, people get bad effects from the pollution that comes from fossil fuels and produces many diseases. Finally, all natural energies are the best energies and right decision to focus on them.

The Statue of Liberty

          The story behind the Statue of Liberty is that it was a gift from French people to the United State in honor of the Centennial of American Independence in 1886. “It was designated as an American National Monument in 1924” (Hugo, V, 2013). It was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, who got the idea about the design of Liberty while he was on a visit to U.S. He got a creative thought in designing the statue which will represent freedom all over the world. Also, the Liberty welcomes many immigrants for it nice design.

Nowadays, it is located in the New York Harbor on Ellis Island. It greeted thousands of immigrants and visitors as they entered New York Bay and arrived in the United States. The Statue of Liberty is 46 m (151 ft) and the surface of the statue is composed of hammered copper sheets 2.4 mm (0.01 in) thick that were riveted to an iron framework. The statue rests upon a concrete therefore, its base and pedestal increase its height of the monument to 93m (305 ft) high (Statue of Liberty, Wikipedia, 2013). It symbolizes the freedom throughout the world. ‘Liberty Enlightening the World’ is the formal name that given to it (Statue of Liberty, Wikipedia, 2013).  The statue design depicts a woman escaping from the chains, which stand at her feet and her right hand holds a burning torch in order to represent liberty. The liberty has seven rays on the top of her head which symbolize seven seas and continents. Even with the change in climate from time to time, Liberty’s body remains in its original status because its green patina gives the Liberty an excellent copper exterior which last for long time and does not affected by weather.

The Statue of Liberty took approximately 11 years to be transformed from a basic idea to a real copper statue that lies down nowadays in New York harbor (1875 – 1886). The Liberty goes over many stages in order to build it. The first stage was the idea itself. Then, it moves to the second stages which is collecting the money for the project in order to get the work done. After that it moves to the third stage and the important one which is the building process of the Liberty. Therefore, for that reasons it took from them long time of process to finish their project. After that French people decided to give the Liberty as a gift to US. It was shipped overseas to New York in 350 pieces and it took four months from them to put all pieces together. “The Statue costs approximately more than $500,000 to build” (Wiki Answer, 2013). This money was collected by the French government and people together; because all of them wanted to participate in the project.

             The Statue of Liberty becomes famous worldwide because it is well known since long time ago. Furthermore, it has been featured in many pictures, movies, music, television and such many other popular features. Also, its images used as a sample on coins, theatrical productions. It is used as a logo sign. It still remain until now the most popular and political simple locally, nationally and internationally. There are also many another reasons for the Statue of Liberty to become famous and popular and one of it that it is the first visible landmark to ships headed for the American Northeast and it is symbolic of freedom.  Also, its historical background makes it famous because it has been given to the U.S. by French in order to celebrate American for their first 100 years of nation. Lady Liberty is built and placed in order to give immigrants arriving from abroad a welcoming signal.

            In conclusion, the Statue of Liberty is really famous statue around the world from a long time ago. It represents one of the basic human principles and the most serious one which is freedom.

            Emirati youths entering labor markets facing lots of difficulties in planning for their futures. More demands are offered by private sector but unfortunately fewer are joining this sector. Job selecting opportunities are given mostly to those who are graduated from colleges and universities. Students must change their mind in the way of choosing their job. The UAE Government is trying to hire as many Emirati youths as they can in private sector through exhibitions such as: Tawdheef. They believe that they will get more training skills but on the other hand it requires competition for promotion. Training programs and internship which are offered from business companies can help in creating a new philosophy in working in private sectors. So, there must be strong connections between schools, universities and the private sector.

            Satellite images from Nasa answered most questions about how African people travelled to the rest of the world. Those images provide much information about historical background of the Arabian Desert. It shows that the Arabian Peninsula was rich with rivers that connected together. Many sites have been discovered such as Al Nafud desert in Saudi Arabia, Jebel Faya in UAE and many others. The most ancient human site and the latest one was found in Sharjah, which carried evidence about three different Paleolithic settlements from many years ago. The archaeologists knew that African people crossed Bab Al Mandab when they found stone tools near the Strait of Hormuz. The sites and theories provide archaeologists with good evidences about human presence. There are many things that changed the Arabian Desert to what it is nowadays. The change in climate conditions affected the Arabian Peninsula. Climate change reduced sources of life such as: water and food and that why most of people faced difficulty to survive.

How do Gulf corals beat the heat? 

In the summer, water temperature can rise too much which affects badly life of corals and reefs in the Gulf. Studies have been carried out by Prof John Burt show how this kind can resist the hot water and stay alive. He finds out that 90 per cent of coral energy produced by a type of algae that lives inside its tissue and produce sugars for energy. On the other hand, corals provide many things for algae such as shelter, nitrogen and carbon dioxide and many others. So, it’s kind of exchanging benefits.  Coral’s have the ability to determine changes in water chemistry through its skeleton. This skeleton is made of calcium carbonate similar to human bones. Corals can be reproduce in many ways such as its breaks off pieces can grow up in sand or any other place. Prof Burt advise Gulf governments to increase seeding reefs, otherwise they will disappear. Corals suffer from high temperatures of water and it has reached its barrier, so it requires a special treatment for corals to be able to sustain.

The RAEng have predicts that a solar superstorm could have serious effect on UK but it would not be disaster. General systems like: GPS, aviation systems and aircraft avionics would need to rely on backup systems in order to continue. Solar storm are common and can affect spacecraft electronics and radio broadcasts. A big solar storm has the ability to produce current and heating tools which has consequences. The storm affected satellites through reducing their lifetime of their parts. The disturbance in the ionosphere affected the Global Positioning System (GPS) through degrading its broadcasts. People must have their own backup. Even though, ships and planes must have alternatives as a backup. The storm has a dangerous aspect in aviation while transmitting radiation to both passengers and aircrew.
